Declan Lion is a painter and the father of Emma M. Lion.
History
Early Life
Declan was born to an English father and an Irish mother. His father was a gentleman and was subsequently disinherited for marrying a shopkeeper's daughter.[2][disputed] Declan was raised in Ireland, but maintained strong family connections in England, despite being disinherited.[2]
Inheritance of Lapis Lazuli
Declan's aunt, Emma M. Lion, received her brother's inheritance after he was disinherited, which inheritance included Lapis Lazuli House and its living. As Emma loved her older brother and adored Declan, she named Declan as her heir. Emma later married a man named Archibald Flat, but died soon after the marriage from influenza. Upon her death, it was revealed that she had made no provision in her will for Archibald besides willing him the books in the library of Lapis Lazuli. As Declan's father was generous, and considering Declan was quite young at the time, it was agreed that Archibald would be allowed to live in the house and enjoy its living until his death, at which point Declan would enjoy his inheritance. This agreement resulted in Declan having to make his own way in the world. However, as a stipulation of the agreement, Declan would be allowed to visit the house once a year—an event that typically took place in June.[2]
Marriage to Emma's Mother, Birth of Emma
At some point prior to 1863, Declan met Emma's Mother.[citation needed] They later married, and Emma's Mother gave birth to their daughter, Emma M. Lion (named after Declan's aunt), in January of 1863.[3]
Death
Declan died sometime around the beginning of 1876.[1] His exact cause of death is unknown.

Emma's Mother
There are very few details on the nature of Declan and Emma's Mother's relationship. It is implied that it was somewhat easy going as they were playful towards each other.[4][5]
Emma M. Lion
Declan and Emma were quite close. From a young age, he taught her to love the written word. Upon his death, Emma was devastated, but took comfort in the books of his library. When she was forced to make the difficult decision to sell her parents belongings in order to be able attend the school she wised, she hid away her father's copy of Shakespeare's works in which he had illustrated many of the pages.[1]
Emma M. Lion (Declan's Aunt)
Despite Declan's Father being disinherited and moving to Ireland, he maintained strong family connections in England. One of those connections was with his sister, Emma M. Lion. Emma loved her brother, in addition to adoring his son, Declan. She adored Declan to such a degree that she named him her sole heir.[2]
Archibald Flat
Despite Declan's generosity to allow Archibald to remain living at Lapis Lazuli (even though he was its legal owner), Archibald only ever tolerated Declan.[2]
Other
Saffronia March
Declan was a mentor to Saffronia in her work as an artist. Saffronia credits Declan's brutally honest critiques of her work as what propelled her talent forward.[6]
Appearance and Personality
Declan is described as having large, wide-set eyes that are an uncanny shade of sea green.[4] In addition to being a gifted artist, he has a deep love for the written word.[1] Emma described Declan as "the most charming, well-liked person anyone has ever met."[2]
