At some point after moving to London, Mary Bairrage hired Jack to pose as her cousin. The boarding house in which she lives only allows her to leave during work hours or when accompanied by an approved chaperone. Mary hired Jack to allow her the freedom to leave when she likes, as she has no family willing to accompany her.^[1]
