This page will teach you how to upload images and insert them into articles.

A.I. Policy

As laid out on the Guidelines page, the use of Artificial Intelligence to generate or modify images is strictly prohibited. Images generated by A.I. will be removed and a warning issued to the User(s) that uploaded them. Continued violations of this policy will result in a ban.

Artist's Permission

The first and foremost rule for images is: You must have the artist's permission to use their work. Please contact the artist(s) and obtain written permission before uploading any images. Please forward all permissions to the Admins.

Existing Images

The simplest way to incorporate images is to use one that has already been uploaded to The Reed and Rite. (We'll cover uploading images in the next section.) The main benefit of using an existing image is that permissions from the artist(s) have already been obtained for its use. You can find existing images in one of two ways:

Simple Search

Start by searching through Category:Images. Here you will find all images, further broken down into subcategories. To find an image here, you can do the following:

1. Select a subcategory.
2. Search the document for your subject.
3. Pick the image that best suits your needs

Detailed Search

If you have a specific subject, you may wish to find all files—usually images—associated with that subject.

1. Navigate to your subjects wiki page.
2. Click on the "Tools" menu in the upper right hand side of the page and select "What links here"
3. Change the Namespace dropdown to "File" and select "Go"
4. Pick the image that best suits your needs

Uploading Files

Images must be uploaded to The Reed and Rite before they can be used in articles. You can do so by using the Upload file link, located in the Tools menu.

1. Select Choose File in the "Source File" window.
2. Navigate to the file you wish to upload.
3. Select Upload.

Next you need to fill in the file description. The "filename" box should be automatically filled after the file is uploaded; please change it to the following format: [subject] by [artist]. Use the Summary field of the File description section to provide details about the image. Typically, the summary should contain links to relevant pages, a short description of the image, the artist(s) name(s), a link to the source of the image (as needed), and any relevant categories.

File Pages

After uploading an image, a page will be created for it named File:FILENAME.EXT, where FILENAME.EXT is the filename (and extension) you provided. You can find a searchable list of all uploaded files on the Special:ListFiles page. (There's also a link to it on the upload page). The file page is where people will usually land when they click on your image in an article.

Using Files

To insert an imagine into a page use the {{image}} template. To use the template, use {{image|FILENAME.EXT|caption|artist=ARTIST's NAME}}

• FILENAME.EXT is the filename (and extension) of the image you want; it does not include the File: prefix.
• caption should be replaced with a caption describing the image; is not required, but it is highly encouraged.
• artist=ARTIST'S NAME, where ARTIST'S NAME should be replaced with the artist's name. This parameter is not required, but highly encouraged.

Additionally, the {{image}} template provides you parameters like side, height, width to adjust the placement of the image (remember to separate parameters with a |). See below for examples of these parameters in action.

Non-Template Image Insertion

For a more detailed guide, see mw:Help:Images.

If you wish for more control over the image formats, you can use [[File:FILENAME.EXT]], however please note that this is not the preferred method for inclusion of images on The Reed and Rite.

FILENAME.EXT is the filename (and extension) of the image. This adds a full size image into the article. Additional parameters may be included, separated by vertical bars (|), to adjust to how the image appears. Some important parameters include.

Format

• border Will provide a simple border but will not provide space for a caption or resize the image.
• frameless Presents image with no frame but allows user preference for image sizing.
• frame Adds a frame and space for captioning.
• thumb Provides frame, space for caption, and option to resize.

Location

Use right, left, center, or none to adjust the default horizontal alignment of the image.

Width

Enter a number followed by "px" to specify the width of the image in pixels. Height will adjust accordingly. (Example: 200px rescales the image to a width of 200px)

Height

Enter xHHpxwhere HH is the desired height of the image in pixels. Width will adjust accordingly. (Example: x200px rescales the image to a height of 200px)

Caption

This is a good place for a simple description and/or giving credit to the artist.

Link

The image will link to the file page by default. To link elsewhere, use link= followed by The Reed and Rite page or URL.

Galleries

Use sub-galleries to add a series of related images. Galleries should be created once a page is no longer able to reasonably hold more art.

Infoboxes

Most articles begin with an infobox, positioned in the top right corner. To insert an image into the infobox, simply provide an image= parameter and input the filename (and extension) of the image you want.

Examples

{{Image}} Example A pen nib silhouette. {{image|Pen.png|A pen nib silhouette.|side=right|width=200px}} A simple thumbnail generated by {{Image}}, aligned right and with a 200px width. The template automatically provides the artist attribution and the caption is added underneath that.

Resized and realigned Example [[File:Pen.png|left|200px|A pen nib silhouette.|link=Emma M. Lion]] A pen nib silhouette. The image is aligned to the left and resized; no border or room for the caption. (Supplying a caption in this use case is superfluous) This image links to the "Emma M. Lion" article.

Thumbnail Example [[File:Pen.png|thumb|the [[cosmere]] symbol]] the cosmere symbol A simple thumbnail with a caption, using the default thumbnail size and position (right).

Resized and realigned Example [[File:Pen.png|left|200px|A pen nib silhouette.|link=Cosmere]] A pen nib silhouette. The image is aligned to the left and resized; no border or room for the caption (supplying one like I did here was pointless). This image links to the "Cosmere" article.

Centered with Border Example [[File:Pen.png|border|center|A pen nib silhouette.|link=https://coppermind.net]] Given a border and centered. No width specified means the image will be full size. Again, no room for a caption as is. This image links to the Coppermind home page. A pen nib silhouette.

Resized and line break Example [[File:Pen.png|none|50px]] Using none (or center)will break the text for the image... the cosmere symbol ... like this.

Gallery Example <gallery widths=75px caption="Lots of cosmere symbols!"> File:Pen.png | 1 File:Pen.png | 2 File:Pen.png | 3 File:Pen.png | 4 File:Pen.png | 5 File:Pen.png | 6 File:Pen.png | 7 File:Pen.png | 8 </gallery> Lots of cosmere symbols! 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
